Today at City Hall LTI launched the prototype hydrogen powered TX4 Taxi. It has a top speed of 80.7 mph and a range of 248.5 miles. It will emit zero emissions and small fleet of 20 of these vehicles are expected to hit the streets of London in 2012, probably around the time of the Olympics.
This vehicle is going to have to be very good to compete with the Mercedes Vito Electric Taxi, which is also under development. The Vito Taxi which is very popular with both the general public and London cab drivers is currently taking a whopping 34% of the market share of new taxis sold in London. It is proving to be a massive success story. I actually own a Vito Taxi and have recently driven the Vito electric prototype and let me tell you its all round design and performance is very impressive indeed.
Sadly I think the design of the TX4 will be the deciding factor that will let the LTI vehicle down. However, a race for the two manufacturers to produce a fleet of these vehicles in time for the Olympics will make a great advertisement for the Olympics, the London cab trade and both of the manufacturers. Let the race begin!
